The cartographic model of the Earth needs to be revised periodically, at the same time geophysical parameters of our planet also have to be refined on a regular basis. Geodesy is greatly relied upon to help solve all these vital tasks and diverse problems in the Earth sciences.

ISS-Reshetnev Company is the only Russian company that designs and builds geodetic satellites. ISS-Reshetnev’s most recent project in this area is the development of the space-based satellite system GEO-IK-2.


ISS-Reshetnev Company is responsible for the development of the next-generation geodetic system based on GEO-IK-2 satellites. They enable to carry out high-definition geodetic measurements thus helping Russian scientists update cartographic models of the Earth and refine its geophysical parameters. The system’s constellation will be comprised of two satellites.

GEO-IK-2 system is intended to:

  • build highly precise geodetic networks in the geocentric coordinate system;
  • solve a wide range of tasks which call for constantly updated mapping data and determination of coordinates of objects on the ground, including:
    • building regional geodetic networks;
    • Earth remote sensing;
    • marine geoid sensing,
    • ice monitoring.

The satellites are to be launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit 1000 kilometers high with an inclination of 99.4 degrees aboard Rockot/Breeze-KM rockets from the Plesetsk cosmodrome.
