ISS-Reshetnev Company has a long history of delivering navigation satellites dating back to the 1960s. It still remains the only Russian company where satellites of this type are designed and built.
Today space navigation in Russia is enabled by means of the Global Navigation Satellite System GLONASS. And ISS-Reshetnev Company is the prime contractor for the system’s space-based segment which includes satellites themselves and the ground control complex. The GLONASS system provides 24-hour navigation services, including highly accurate location information, velocity and precise time to users and objects equipped with a dedicated receiver. Its high stability performance is vital to the country’s defense capabilities and plays a critical role in supporting its economy, science and manufacturing.
The GLONASS system is based on 24 navigation satellites in the medium Earth circular orbit 19 100 kilometers high. The constellation consists of three orbital planes with eight satellites per plane. Apart from that, to make the system even more reliable, there are satellite spares available both in orbits and on the ground.
As of today, the GLONASS is comprised of advanced Glonass-M satellites, developed and built by ISS-Reshetnev Company. They ensure complete coverage of the Earth and global signal availability. The company is now busy developing modernized Glonass-K navigation satellites. The first satellite of this series has already been launched into orbit and is currently undergoing flight tests.
